Too many young lives are cut short by cystic fibrosis; almost half of the sufferers who die do not live to see their 25th birthday. We continue to courageously invest in innovative CF research and care, but we can only do this with the generous support of Canadians. May is Cystic Fibrosis Awareness Month and I invite everyone to champion and support our great cause. Kamloops is taking on Prince George for the annual SPCA City Challenge. The two communities are competing against each other, with bragging rights to the one who raises the most cash for their local SPCA. The theme of this year's City Challenge is "old rivals meet again." On Saturday, May 15, the public is invited to the BC SPCA & Hill's® Science Diet® Open House at the Kamloops shelter from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The family-focused event includes a barbecue, children's games and prizes, a bouncy house for kids and special guests of the furry and four-legged kind from the shelter. On May 29, there is a final Roundup event at the Kamloops Walmart store. There will be a barbecue and raffle ticket sale, and Radio NL will be broadcasting from the store location. Then on May 31 from 5 p.m. on, a pub night fundraiser is set for the Fox'n Hounds, 945 Columbia St. West. Tickets are $10 and include a scrumptious dinner. Students at Kay Bingham are holding a shoe drive to help people facing extreme in Nicaragua. Hundreds live at the garbage dump and live without basic needs such as clothing, food, and clean water. Knowing that shoes are an important necessity, students are asking people in our community to dig deep and ask everyone they know if they have any spare shoes. They will take ANY shoes in any condition. If you would like to just drop by the school with a few shoes, do so any time from 9am to 1pm on school days. Drop off is OUTDOORS at 950 Southill Street (Kay Bingham Elementary School)... there will be bins placed just inside the fence on the LARGE field. Collecting is also going on at the TCC, Northhills Mall, Westmount Elementary, Dr. Hallett's office.
